How will this transform us?

When we come out of this COVID19 crisis I wonder who we will become as a soccer culture. John Adams once said "a problem is just an opportunity in disguise." The problem is clear. Everyone is being forced to basically train on their own and at home. So what's the opportunity?

The opportunity is that we create a culture of soccer players that know how to and embrace training on their own. Our players need to understand training three times per week with their club teams and playing games on weekends is not enough to reach their full potential.

The two most important components to creating this culture is that players need to:

  1. Own their game.

  2. Do the work.

Owning their game means taking personal responsibility for their development. The message to players needs to be that they must take ownership. Coaches, teammates, parents aren't responsible for your development. You are!

Doing the work is the obvious second step. Everybody says they want to be great but not everyone wants to do the work.

My hope is that this challenge will transform our culture into one where players love training on their own, understand it is their responsibility and critical to improvement, and want to put in the work.
